Who they were
Tiburcio Arnáiz was born in Valladolid, Spain, on 11 August 1865. After twelve years as a diocesan priest he joined the Jesuits.
In Málaga he gave himself to the poorest, above all in the scattered farmsteads of the countryside, where he founded the Missionaries of the Rural Doctrines to teach the faith and basic learning. He died in Málaga on 18 July 1926.
The miracles
A man — Málaga, Spain — mid-1990s
A man lay in a coma for a week on the verge of death, and suffered a cardiac and respiratory arrest. He recovered through Father Arnáiz's intercession; the Vatican's medical board found on 15 December 2016 that science could not explain the healing.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a man was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 18 December 2017, opening the way to beatification. Beatification followed on 20 October 2018 by Cardinal Angelo Becciu, for Pope Francis.
