Who they were
At Ravenna, the commemoration of Saint Vitalis: on this day, as tradition says, the famous basilica in that city was dedicated to God under his name. He, together with the holy martyrs Valeria, Gervase, Protase and Ursicinus, has been venerated from time immemorial for the fearless faith steadfastly defended.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

The Roman Martyrology names him on 28 April among the holy martyrs venerated at Ravenna with Saint Vitalis from time immemorial.
