Who they were
Julia Ledóchowska was born at Loosdorf, Austria, on 17 April 1865, second of seven children of a noble Polish family; her sister was Blessed Maria Teresa Ledóchowska and her brother Włodzimierz became Superior General of the Jesuits. As a 24-year-old Ursuline novice in Kraków she wrote: 'If only I could love! Burn, consume myself in love.'
As Mother Maria Urszula of Jesus she opened Poland's first residence for women university students and founded the Ursulines of the Agonising Heart of Jesus.
