Who they were
Venturino joined the Dominicans at Bergamo in 1319 and from 1328 won fame preaching through northern Italy. In 1335 he led about thirty thousand converts on a penitential pilgrimage to Rome, which was misunderstood; he was imprisoned from 1335 to 1343.
Restored to favour by Clement VI, he preached a crusade against the Turks with remarkable success. He died at Smyrna on 28 March 1346.
