Vergilius of Salzburg
Irish churchman, astronomer, bishop of Salzburg
Feast: 27 November (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Virgilius (Fergal), an Irish abbot of Aghaboe, left Ireland about 745 and settled in France, then went to Bavaria, where he became Abbot of St Peter's at Salzburg; in humility he had another bishop perform his episcopal functions.
He was a learned man who held that the earth is a sphere. Made Bishop of Salzburg about 767, he built up his diocese and spread the faith in Carinthia. He died at Salzburg on 27 November 789.
