Who they were
Veronica Antal was born at Nisiporești, Moldavia, in northern Romania, on 7 December 1935 to a farming family. Her grandmother taught her to pray, to go to Sunday Mass, to spin and to sew; she was a cheerful girl, good at school, who also worked in the fields.
At sixteen she received the Lord's call and became a Secular Franciscan. Just over twenty, she chose to be killed rather than give up her chastity; she had been reading the life of St Maria Goretti.

A young Romanian woman who chose death rather than lose the purity she had given God.
