Who they were
Victor Emilio Moscoso Cárdenas was born at Cuenca, Ecuador, on 21 April 1846, the ninth of thirteen children of a well-off, fervent Christian family. He became a Jesuit and was ordained on 1 November 1876.
He taught at Lima and then at the Colegio San Luis in Quito, of which he became rector in 1892. He was killed in 1897 in a climate of persecution against the Catholic Church, the first Ecuadorian martyr.
