Vilmos Apor

Who they were
Vilmos Apor was born at Sighișoara, Romania, on 28 February 1892, sixth of eight children of Baron Gábor Apor and Countess Fidelia Pálffy. He was 'the parish priest of the poor', and continued that ministry as Bishop of Győr in the dark years of the war, a generous benefactor of the needy and defender of the persecuted, speaking out against injustice to minorities, especially the Jewish community.
He opened his house to about three hundred refugees. On the evening of Good Friday 1945 he was shot for defending some girls from soldiers, and died three days later.
