William Exmew

Who they were

William Exmew, a Cambridge classical scholar, became a Carthusian of the London Charterhouse, its sub-prior and procurator; his like for virtue and learning could not be found in the English province.

Denounced as determined to suffer anything rather than deny the Pope's primacy, he was chained standing to a post for thirteen days, tried and executed at Tyburn on 19 June 1535.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A learned Carthusian who died for the unity of the Church.
