Who they were
William, whose early life is confused in the sources, went to Rome and on to Jerusalem in penance for his sins.
Returning about 1153, he lived as a hermit near Pisa and finally, from 1155, in the desert valley of Maleval near Siena, where his disciple Albert joined him. He died on 10 February 1157.
The miracles
The Catholic Encyclopedia records that he was beatified in 1202.
Why that counted as sanctity
A penitent pilgrim who ended his days as a hermit.
