William of St-Thierry

Who they were

William, of a noble family of Liège, became a Benedictine at Reims and in 1119 Abbot of St-Thierry. He was a close lifelong friend of St Bernard.

He longed to join Bernard at Clairvaux, but at last resigned and became a Cistercian at Signy, where amid almost constant suffering he gave himself to prayer and writing. He died there about 1148.
