Who they were
William, offered to a monastery as a child, went to Cluny in 987 and in 990 became Abbot of Saint-Bénigne at Dijon.
He reformed Benedictine monasteries across Normandy, Burgundy and Lorraine, ruling over forty houses and 1,200 monks, and founded schools for monks and laity. He died at Fécamp on 1 January 1031.

Though never formally canonised, he is honoured as a saint in various places.
