Zacarías Cuesta

Who they were

Zacarías Cuesta Campo was born at Villasidro on 11 June 1916. Lame in one leg, he studied music at the college and worked as a cobbler.

He was killed in 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, with the priest Valentín Palencia Marquina and three other young laymen of the college Don Palencia had founded; their only fault, the Dicastery says, was wanting to defend the faith and share the fate of their father, teacher and friend.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

A lame young cobbler who died beside his priest.
