Alcuin
8th-century Northumbrian scholar, clergyman, poet, and teacher

Who they were
Alcuin, a Northumbrian of noble family born about 735, probably at York, entered the cathedral school there as a child and was taught by Aelbert and Archbishop Egbert. When Aelbert became archbishop in 767, Alcuin took charge of the school, drawing many students and enriching its library.
An eminent educator, scholar and theologian, he became the leading teacher at the court of Charlemagne. He died on 19 May 804.
