Who they were
Alexander, reckoned by St Irenaeus the fifth pope after the Apostles, ruled the Church for about ten years in the reign of Trajan.
A Roman tradition of the fifth century says he was martyred by beheading on the Via Nomentana on 3 May.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
