Who they were

Alexander, Patriarch of Alexandria, had passed through the bloody persecutions as a priest. His election kept the heretic Arius from the see; he condemned Arius in a council at Alexandria and, it is said, drew up the acts of the Council of Nicaea.

He was remembered as devoted to the poor, good and gentle to all, and so mortified that he never broke his fast while the sun was in the sky. He died on 17 April 326.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
