Ángela de San José

Who they were
Mother Ángela de San José (Francisca Desamparados Honorata Lloret Martí) was born at Villajoyosa, near Valencia, on 16 January 1875. A qualified teacher, she entered the Congregation of the Christian Doctrine in 1903, served as local superior and secretary general, and from 1931 was superior general.
When the communities were scattered in 1936 she gathered the sisters who had nowhere to go into a flat, where they lived in prayer and sewing. On the night of 19 November 1936 they were taken to Paterna and shot in the early hours of 20 November, speaking words of forgiveness. She and sixteen sisters were beatified in 1995.

As a martyr she was raised to the altars without a miracle.
Why that counted as sanctity
Superior general of the Congregation of the Christian Doctrine, she led seventeen sisters to martyrdom in 1936.
