Anthelm of Belley

Who they were

At Belley in Burgundy, in present-day France, Saint Anthelm, bishop, who, as a monk, rebuilt the building of the Grande Chartreuse destroyed by a heavy snowfall; then, become prior, he convened the General Chapter and, raised to the episcopal see, shone in the work of correcting the morals of clergy and nobles, carried out with tireless commitment and fearless firmness.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

The Roman Martyrology remembers him on 26 June as the Carthusian who rebuilt the Grande Chartreuse, convened its General Chapter and, as bishop of Belley, reformed clergy and nobles.
