Who they were
Hugh, of a noble Burgundian house, went with his widowed father into an Augustinian monastery as a boy and became a canon there. Longing for a wholly contemplative life, he became a Carthusian at the Grande Chartreuse.
He later became Bishop of Lincoln, where he was received everywhere with extraordinary love and respect. He died at London on 16 November 1200; King John helped carry his coffin at Lincoln.
