Antoninus of Florence

Who they were

Antoninus Pierozzi was born in Florence on 1 March 1389, son of a notary. At fifteen he asked Blessed John Dominic to admit him to the Dominicans; accepted a year later, he made his novitiate at Cortona with Fra Angelico. He became a leader of the Dominican reform, prior of many convents, and from 1433 to 1446 vicar of the reformed Tuscan Congregation; in 1436 he founded the famous convent of San Marco in Florence, with the church built with Cosimo de' Medici's help.

As Archbishop of Florence he was known for his care of the poor and his writings on moral theology. He died on 2 May 1459; Pope Pius II gave instructions for his funeral and presided at it.
