Braulio of Zaragoza

Who they were

Braulio succeeded his brother John as Bishop of Saragossa in 631. His influence reached bishops and kings, and it was at his urging that his friend St Isidore of Seville wrote the Etymologies.

He attended the councils of Toledo of 633, 636 and 638, and wrote fearlessly in defence of the Spanish bishops to Pope Honorius I. He lost his sight towards the end of his life and died at Saragossa about 651.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A learned bishop and friend of St Isidore who served the Church of Spain.
