Eugenius III of Toledo

Who they were

Eugenius, son of a Goth, was a cleric of Toledo cathedral. Elected archbishop in 647, he fled to Saragossa to live as a monk, but King Chindaswinth made him return.

Small and frail but zealous, he reformed the chant of the Divine Office and wrote prose and poetry full of piety and sound faith. He died on 13 November 657.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A reluctant archbishop who served God in word and song.
