Who they were

Elisabetta Sanna was born at Codrongianos, near Sassari in Sardinia, on 23 April 1788. Smallpox at three months left her unable ever to raise her arms. She married and had seven children, five of whom lived, and taught the village children their catechism.

Widowed in 1825, she ran the farm, raised her children and helped those in need. She travelled to Rome, where St Vincent Pallotti became her spiritual director; illness kept her from ever returning to Sardinia, and she spent her remaining years in Rome in prayer and in the service of the sick and the poor, as a Minim tertiary and member of Pallotti's Union of Catholic Apostolate. She died in Rome in 1857 with such a reputation for holiness that crowds came to her grave.

The miracles

A healing through her intercession, in Brazil in 2008, was approved by decree on 21 January 2016, and she was beatified at the Basilica of Saccargia in Sardinia on 17 September 2016. The reports checked disagree on the details of the healing, so none are given here. One more approved miracle is needed for canonisation.

Why that counted as sanctity

Beatification followed on 17 September 2016 by Cardinal Angelo Amato, for Pope Francis.
