Gervasius and Protasius

Who they were

Gervasius and Protasius are martyrs of Milan, probably of the second century, and patrons of the city. Their Acts, of uncertain date, make them twins, sons of the martyrs Vitalis and Valeria, scourged and beheaded; the date of their death is uncertain, probably under Antoninus. Their feast in the West, 19 June, is the day St Ambrose found and translated their relics.

There was never a formal cause: they have been honoured as martyrs since the fourth century.
