Vitalis of Milan

Who they were

Vitalis, according to a legend of little historical value, was the husband of St Valeria and father of Sts Gervasius and Protasius. He is said to have encouraged a wavering martyr and buried him, and for this to have been racked and buried alive.

The famous church of San Vitale at Ravenna, dedicated in 547, honours him.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

Why that counted as sanctity

A martyr remembered with his family of saints.
