Who they were
Philipp Jeningen was born at Eichstätt, in Bavaria, on 5 January 1642. He asked to join the Jesuits at fourteen but his father opposed it for seven years; he persevered and entered in 1663. He longed to be a missionary, even a martyr, like St Francis Xavier.
Instead he was sent to Ellwangen, where he looked after a small chapel of Our Lady that drew pilgrims, built the pilgrimage church on the Schönenberg, and spent his life preaching in the villages of the countryside around. He died at Ellwangen on 8 February 1704.
The miracles
A 42-year-old father of two — Germany — January 1985
A married man of 42 was dying of an acute, gangrenous inflammation of the gallbladder with severe sepsis, pneumonia with respiratory failure, and bleeding from an ulcer. He received the last sacraments on 1 January 1985, and from that day his wife and daughter, then other relatives and friends, and even his Protestant doctor, prayed to Father Jeningen, at home, in the street and in the hospital. He recovered and afterwards enjoyed good health.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of a 42-year-old father of two was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 19 June 2021, opening the way to beatification.
