Who they were

Peter of Tarentaise joined the Dominicans at sixteen and became a famous master at Paris. He was Archbishop of Lyons and Cardinal-Bishop of Ostia, and spoke at the Council of Lyons in 1274, where he preached at St Bonaventure's funeral.

Elected on 21 January 1276, the first Dominican pope, he worked for peace in Italy and for union with the Greeks. He died at Rome on 22 June 1276.
