Isaac Thomas Hecker

Who they were

Isaac Hecker, born in New York on 18 December 1819, worked in his family's bakery from eleven, studying philosophy as he kneaded dough. Searching restlessly for religious truth, he was baptised a Catholic in January 1844.

He became a Redemptorist, returned to America as a missionary in 1851, and founded the Paulist Fathers. He also founded The Catholic World and promoted the Catholic press. He died in New York on 22 December 1888.
