Pius IX

Who they were

Giovanni Maria Mastai-Ferretti, refused for the Noble Guard because of epilepsy, studied theology and was ordained in 1819. He directed an orphanage in Rome, served in Chile, and became Archbishop of Spoleto, where he persuaded 4,000 armed revolutionaries to lay down their arms.

Pope from 1846, he defined the Immaculate Conception, extended the feast of the Sacred Heart to the whole Church and convoked the First Vatican Council. He died in Rome on 7 February 1878.
