José María Escoto Ruiz

Who they were

José María Escoto Ruiz was born on 10 August 1878 at Atotonilco el Alto in Jalisco, in the archdiocese of Guadalajara; he had married in 1926 but, having obtained an indult of the Holy See, he set out for the consecrated life, as his wife did too, beginning his novitiate in 1935.

He was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Benedict XVI, among Ángel María Prat Hostench and his sixteen companions of the Order of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, killed in 1936.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

The decree on martyrdom names him among the Carmelites killed in the persecution in Spain in 1936.
