Who they were
Lanfranc, born at Pavia, practised law and became a famous teacher in Normandy. Feeling a call to religious life, he left secretly for the poor new monastery of Bec, where he became prior and opened a school that drew scholars from across Europe.
He became Archbishop of Canterbury and died there on 24 May 1089.
