Lazarus of Bethany

Who they were

Lazarus, brother of Martha and Mary of Bethany, was a friend of Jesus. When he died and had been buried, Jesus came to Bethany, told Martha 'I am the resurrection and the life', and called Lazarus out of the tomb.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: Lazarus is honoured as a saint from the Gospels. Since 2021 he is remembered with his sisters on 29 July.

Why that counted as sanctity

Lazarus, loved by Christ, came out of the tomb at His word, the sign of the life Christ gives to all who believe in Him.
