Leontius of Fréjus

Who they were

Leontius, probably from Nîmes and brother of St Castor of Apt, became Bishop of Fréjus early in the fifth century. Little is certain of his life, but he was undoubtedly a man of eminent holiness, patron with the Blessed Virgin of his cathedral.

The chief event of his episcopate was the founding of the monastery of Lérins by St Honoratus, whom he encouraged.

The miracles

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.

A holy bishop who helped found Lérins.
