Louis Versiglia
Italian Roman Catholic missionary, bishop and saint (1873–1930)
Feast: 9 July (not on the universal Roman calendar; kept in the Roman Martyrology or local calendars)
Who they were
Luigi Versiglia was born at Oliva Gessi near Pavia on 5 June 1873 and became a Salesian. In 1911 he began the mission of Heungshan, between Macau and Canton, and later became a bishop, titular Bishop of Caristo.
Receiving a chalice from the Salesian Rector Major, he recalled Don Bosco's dream that when a chalice was filled with blood in China the Salesian work would spread wonderfully. In 1930 he and the priest Callisto Caravario were martyred on the banks of the Beijiang near Shaoguan for giving Christian care to those entrusted to them.
