Luigi Biraghi

Who they were
Luigi Biraghi was born at Vignate near Milan on 2 November 1801, the fifth of eight children of farmers, and studied at the seminaries of Castello, Monza and Milan. From 1833 he was spiritual director of the major seminary, a living example to his students of love for Christ and the Church and of total obedience.
He founded the Sisters of St Marcellina, the Marcellines. In 1864, under his direction, the urn of St Ambrose and the martyrs Gervase and Protase was rediscovered. In 1873 Pius IX made him a domestic prelate.
