Miguel Zarragua Iturrízaga

Who they were

Born at Yurreta in the diocese of Vitoria on 11 April 1870, he made his religious vows as a lay brother in 1890 and was given various duties in Mauritania; back in Spain he was assigned to nursing the sick and then moved to Fuenteovejuna as sacristan. He was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Benedict XVI with Félix Echevarría Gorostiaga and six companions of the Order of Friars Minor.

The miracles

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

The decree on martyrdom names him among the seven Friars Minor of Fuenteovejuna killed in 1936 for their fidelity to Christ and the Church.
