Félix Echevarría Gorostiaga

Who they were

Félix Echevarría Gorostiaga belonged to the Franciscan community of Fuente Obejuna in the diocese of Córdoba, where the friars worked eagerly for the people and above all at the Christian teaching of children and young people, and were loved and respected by all; when the persecution of the Church broke out in Spain in 1936 they went on serving God and the people with their usual fervour, until on 18 July a group of enemies of the Catholic faith took over the town and two days later armed men set upon the friars' house.

The decree on the martyrdom of Félix Echevarría Gorostiaga and six companions of the Order of Friars Minor was published in the Acta Apostolicae Sedis in 2006, and he was beatified by Benedict XVI among the martyrs of Spain raised to the altars in October 2007.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.
