Who they were
Paschal, a Roman, was superior of the monastery of St Stephen by St Peter's, where he cared for pilgrims. He was unanimously elected pope in 817.
He remained loyal to St Theodore the Studite against the Iconoclasts and sheltered fleeing monks, and improved Rome's churches. He died in 824 and is honoured as a saint.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
