Peter of Alexandria

Who they were

Peter, possibly once head of the catechetical school of Alexandria, became its bishop in 300 and led the reaction against extreme Origenism. When he went into hiding during Diocletian's persecution, Meletius of Lycopolis usurped his functions and consecrated bishops to sees whose occupants were in prison for the faith, and Peter excommunicated him; so began the Meletian schism. Peter was martyred in November 311.

There was never a formal cause: Peter has been honoured as a martyr since his death.

Why that counted as sanctity

Peter guarded the unity and faith of the Church of Alexandria in persecution and schism, and gave his life for Christ.
