Polish Roman Catholic cardinal (1901-1981)
Who they were
Stefan Wyszyński was born at Zuzela, Poland, on 3 August 1901 to a poor, very religious family, entered the Włocławek seminary in 1920 and was ordained on 3 August 1924. After the war, with priests scarce, he was at once seminary rector, parish priest of two parishes and editor of several diocesan publications.
As Cardinal, Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw and Primate of Poland, he often had to take delicate decisions; his action and witness dealt a heavy blow to the communist regime that sought to uproot Catholicism in Poland. He died in Warsaw on 28 May 1981.
