Who they were
Stefan Wyszyński was born on 3 August 1901. On 12 November 1948 he became Archbishop of Gniezno and Warsaw, Primate of Poland. Under Communist rule he defended the Church; in May 1953, on behalf of the bishops, he sent the authorities the message known as 'Non possumus', and he is remembered as the 'Primate of the Millennium'.
His spiritual testament was 'I entrust everything to Mary'. He died in Warsaw on 28 May 1981.
The miracles
Sister Nulla Garlińska — Szczecin, Poland — 15 March 1989
A sister of the Disciples of the Cross with thyroid cancer that had spread was in hospital in Szczecin in January 1989 in desperate condition, with suffocating respiratory failure. Her superior, who had worked with the Cardinal, began a novena to him, joined by the sisters, priests, the patient's parents, a hospital doctor and the patient herself. On 15 March 1989 she was healed.
Pope Francis looked forward at a general audience to his beatification together with Mother Elżbieta Róża Czacka.
Why that counted as sanctity
The case of Sister Nulla Garlińska was examined by the Church's doctors and theologians and approved as a miracle on 2 October 2019, opening the way to beatification.
