Who they were
Łucja Szewczyk was born in 1828 at Szepetówka, Volhynia, into a deeply believing family; orphaned, she was raised by a married half-sister. At twenty she professed in the Franciscan Third Order and took private vows.
She chose to care for children in orphanages, the elderly in almshouses and the sick in hospitals. Despite obstacles from the tsarist authorities, in 1881, with Blessed Honorat Koźmiński, she began a clandestine congregation, the Daughters of Our Lady of Sorrows, which she led for over twenty years. She died on 5 June 1905.
The miracles
She was beatified in Kraków. The Dicastery's biography does not describe the miracles approved in the cause.
Why that counted as sanctity
An orphan who built a hidden congregation to serve orphans, the old and the sick under tsarist rule.
