Vincenza Gerosa

Who they were

Caterina Gerosa was born at Lovere, near Bergamo, on 29 October 1784 to a well-off family, eldest of four sisters. Too frail to go to school, she worked diligently in the family shop and lived a simple piety of daily Mass. The Napoleonic years brought hardship and the deaths of her father, a sister and, in 1814, her mother.

With St Bartolomea Capitanio she founded at Lovere the Sisters of Charity, known as the Sisters of Maria Bambina, to meet the many needs of every age. When Bartolomea died young, Vincenza was tempted to go home, but, urged by her director Angelo Bosio, carried on the work.

A shopkeeper who carried on a great work of charity after her co-foundress died.
