William Andleby

Who they were

William Andleby of Etton in Yorkshire went abroad at twenty-five to fight in the Dutch war, called at Douai to argue with Dr Allen, and was converted the next day. He became a priest.

For twenty years he worked among the poor, at first always on foot and meanly dressed, living in austerity, fasting and continual prayer. He was taken and executed at York on 4 July 1597.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

A soldier converted overnight who became a priest of the poor.
