Who they were
Eucherius, on his wife's death, withdrew to the monastery of Lérins, where his sons lived, and then to a nearby island, to give himself to study and mortification. He wrote In Praise of the Desert to St Hilary of Arles.
His fame spread and he was chosen Bishop of Lyons, probably in 434; he attended the Council of Orange in 441, and died about 449.

There was never a formal cause: he has been honoured as a saint since before the Church's formal processes began.
Why that counted as sanctity
A widower who became a hermit and then a learned bishop.
