Ángel Cuartas Cristóbal

Who they were

Born at Lastres on 1 June 1910, he worked from boyhood to support his large family, entered the minor seminary of Valdediós in 1923 and then the major seminary of Oviedo; though his family and friends urged him not to return after the proclamation of the Second Republic, he went back for his fifth year of theology and was seized and killed with five other seminarians. Pope Francis beatified him with Ángel Cuartas Cristóbal and his eight companions on 9 March 2019.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

The decree on martyrdom records that he chose to return to the seminary although warned not to, and was killed with five fellow students.
