Enrique Izquierdo Palacios

Who they were

Born at Oviedo in February 1890, he made his solemn vows in 1909 and was ordained priest in 1914; he taught letters and mathematics in the friaries of Corias, Las Caldas de Besaya and Navelgas, and at the time of his martyrdom he was superior of the community and rector of the school for candidates to the consecrated life. He was beatified on 28 October 2007 by Benedict XVI at the head of a group of fourteen Dominicans killed in 1936.

As a martyr he was raised to the altars without a miracle.

Why that counted as sanctity

The decree on martyrdom names him as the first of fourteen Dominicans killed in the 1936 persecution in Spain.
