Mauricio Íñiguez de Heredia Alzóla

Who they were

Mauricio Íñiguez de Heredia Alzóla, in the world Alexander, was born on 8 February 1877 at Dallo in Alava, Spain; left an orphan, he was brought up in the Christian faith by his father's parents and by his teachers together with his brother Benedicto, who also joined the Hospitaller Order of St John of God, and he made his perpetual vows on 12 March 1905. He was so marked by piety and diligence that everyone called him a holy man, and he was chosen to collect alms for the works of the Order; after 1934 he lived with the brothers at Manresa, working in the hospital, and when he regained his freedom he fled to lodgings in Barcelona with his fellow brother Luis Beltrán Solá Jiménez, where both were seized near the Ateneo clinic and shot, and afterwards buried in the cemetery of Montjuic. He was beatified on 13 October 2013 by Pope Francis.

Everyone who knew him called him a holy man, and he was shot in the street in Barcelona with the brother who had fled with him.
